UFP Technologies Introduces Insulated Shipping Container
For Bulk Drug Transportation

September 30, 2014 - Georgetown, MA —
UFP Technologies, a producer of innovative custom-engineered components, products, and specialty packaging has recently introduced a custom insulated shipping container to house the BioShell® Suspension Pack. The new insulated shipper solves the issue of temperature variations throughout the cold chain distribution process. UFP Technologies’ BioShell is a universal storage container which protects single use biopharmaceutical bags during storage, handling and shipping. The insulated shipper keeps frozen BioShells within an adequate temperature range during transportation. The contents within the shipper can be stored as low as -80°C.

A critical step in the cold chain distribution process is ensuring that bulk drug shipments remain undamaged and within a specific temperature range during transportation. An increase in temperature throughout this transportation process could compromise the integrity of these temperature sensitive products, resulting in large potential loses for pharmaceutical companies. To mitigate these risks companies are relying on cold chain solutions that can provide impact protection and maintain low temperatures throughout the supply chain.

BioShell Insulated Shipper by UFP Technologies UFP Technologies’ insulated shipper consists of an outer box containing high-performance insulation foam panels combined with specialty film. The combination of foam and film improves the insulating properties as well as providing a longer lasting, cleanable surface. A tray containing dry ice or phase-change materials is added to the insulated shipper to achieve the proper temperatures during transport. UFP Technologies’ insulated shippers are customizable to meet customers’ transportation and temperature requirements.

Numerous tests have been conducted on the BioShell and insulated shipper at UFP Technologies’ ISTA certified facilities to ensure quality and function of the design. This includes simulated accidental drop tests at various temperatures to ensure that the contents within the BioShell container remain undamaged during extreme conditions.

“We are taking the worry out of switching to, and increasing, single-use bag utilization,” said Tuna Sava, Manager of BioPharm Products. “I am delighted to see the amount of trust the industry has placed on us.  Our clients have experienced significant reduction in product loss after adopting BioShells and our insulated shipper.  With several new products nearing launch, we will make life with bags even easier.”

UFP Technologies will be showcasing the BioShell and insulated shipper along with other solutions for the biopharmaceutical industry at this year’s ISPE Boston Product Show, ISPE Annual Show and Interphex 2015. For more information visit www.bio-shell.com.

UFP Technologies, Inc. Introduces BioShell™ Suspension Pack

July 11, 2011 - Georgetown, MA The next generation of protecting single-use biopharmaceutical bags was announced today.  The BioShell™ Suspension Pack, by UFP Technologies, advances bag protection with a universal storage container protecting contents within a cushion of air.

The first generation of BioShell™, launched in 2009, was an innovative solution for frozen bag protection that became widely adopted across the BioPharm industry.  The BioShell Suspension Pack is the next step in protection, offering versatility for both liquid and frozen bags.

Biopharmaceutical bags placed inside of the BioShell Suspension Pack are enveloped tightly in a durable film that suspends products within a polycarbonate shell.  The suspension film absorbs shocks during impact, preventing damage to the bag by eliminating contact with the outer shell.  The design allows for use with a varying number of tubes, tube lengths, data loggers, clamps or filters without sacrificing protection.  All contents are in plain sight through the UV protective shell and film.  Any possible kinks and/or stress points are in view for quick correction.

“The BioShell Suspension Pack offers unmatched versatility for bag protection,” said Tuna Sava, Manager of BioPharm Products.  “Varying sized bags – at any fill level – can be loaded into the same shell without compromising security.  The shell can be used as a process tray for liquid bags as well as for freezing, storage and transportation,” says Sava.

The unit is stackable and designed to maximize part density in industry standard freezers.  The entire system or select features of the BioShell Suspension Pack are fully customizable.

The BioShell Suspension Pack will be on display at the ISPE Annual Meeting November 6-9 in Dallas, TX.  For more information visit www.bio-shell.com or call 800-372-3172.

UFP Technologies Introduces BioShell™

February 5, 2009 - Georgetown, MA UFP Technologies, Inc., a fabricator of custom packaging and component solutions, introduces BioShell™, a single use bag protection system.  BioShell is designed to safeguard bags during storage, handling and transportation.  It can handle multiple drops at -70°C.  It is made from high purity, USP Class VI foam with a glass transition temperature of -85°C.  BioShell is lightweight, easy to handle and is created to save space.

Each BioShell is custom created for user’s bags, equipment and processes.  With its adjustable thermal conductivity, BioShell can adhere to any freeze/thaw cycle.  User specific bag dimensions, port and hose locations, storage, handling and transportation equipment determine each design.  The single-piece system follows bag’s contours and braces it without additional internal components or dunnage.

BioShell has a dual-density foam construction.  The inner layer is soft and provides the cushioning required during accidental drops.  The outer shell is of a firm, high density foam that gives BioShell its structural integrity and puncture resistance.  Even at -80°C, the system retains its flexible cushioning properties to protect bags against multiple impacts.

BioShell is made from lightweight foam that significantly reduces shipping costs compared to heavier solid plastic materials.  Nestable and stackable design minimizes space required in storage and transportation.

BioShell is made using high-purity, non-particulating, clean room suitable foam.  Foam is converted from rigid plastic using only nitrogen without any traditional, usually toxic, foaming agents.  It is shipped clean room-ready.

Its robust structure is designed not only to protect its contents but also to last in a returnable system.
